The Lava Flow Rita

The Lava Flow Rita

The Lava Flow Rita

It’s hot. It’s cold. It’s blended bliss with a tequila twist.

When the August heat is cookin’ and your flip-flops are melting to the pavement, there’s only one thing to do: pour yourself a Lava Flow Rita and let the tropics take over. This wild mash-up of a frozen margarita and a piña colada brings creamy coconut, bold strawberry, and tequila together in a perfect beachy storm. It’s basically vacation in a glass… without the airport delays.

Legend has it, this fiery frozen delight originated when a Parrothead at a tiki bar yelled, “Why not both?!” while staring down a piña colada and a margarita. A blender, a splash of recklessness, and some strawberry purée later… the Lava Flow Rita was born. It’s the tropical tornado we didn’t know we needed.

Lava Flow Rita Recipe – Serves: 2 hot & thirsty party people

Strawberry Lava Base:

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 oz light rum (optional, for that colada authenticity)
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • Splash of lime juice

Margarita Piña Colada Layer:

  • 2 oz silver tequila
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • 1 oz lime juice (fresh-squeezed, like a boss)
  • 1 oz coconut cream
  • ½ cup pineapple juice
  • 1 cup ice

Optional Rim:

  • Coconut flakes or sugar + lime zest mix for a sweet tropical edge

Instructions:

  1. Blend the strawberry lava base until smooth. Set aside like it’s the VIP of the cocktail.
  2. Rim your glasses with lime juice, then dip into your chosen coconut/sugar mix.
  3. In a clean blender, blend the piña margarita layer ingredients until creamy and frosty.
  4. Pour the strawberry base into the bottom of each glass.
  5. Slowly pour the creamy margarita mixture over the strawberry to create that sexy lava flow effect. Do not stir, you want those swirls!
  6. Garnish with a strawberry, pineapple wedge, or a flamingo stir stick if you’re feelin’ extra. (And you should always be feelin’ extra.)

Parrothead Pairing Suggestions:

  • Soundtrack: “Volcano” (obviously), “Coconut Telegraph,” or “Island” by Mac McAnally for good Buffett-adjacent vibes
  • Snack: Coconut shrimp, mango salsa, or just a spoon because you will want to scrape the sides
  • Mood: One part beach bum, one part blender boss.

Parrothead Toast for The Lava Flow Rita

“Here’s to good friends, frozen drinks,
Strawberry swirls and tropical kinks.
To laughter that’s loud and worries that fade,
We came for the chaos, and baby, we stayed!”

Sip it slow… or don’t. It’s August. Time’s fake.

Fins up and straws in, friends—August never tasted so good. Stay cool, stay weird, and stay blended.
